12 Years ago: Only hours earlier, this ghostly ice palace was the London YM-YWCA building at Queens Avenue and Wellington Street, It was early Sunday January 5th, 1981, when a blaze forced 72 residents and staff, most in pajamas, out into the minus 33-degree weather. Fire trucks were stuck in the frozen water, hydrants jammed, and hoses became frozen logs that had to be dragged back to firehalls. No one died in the fire. An arson charge against a Y employee was dismissed at a preliminary hearing. (Source: London Free Press)
