Man held by police after fire guts store

A man is in custody today following a fire which caused between $20,000 and $25,000 damage to the Horton Variety Store, 216 ½ Horton St., early today.

Chief fire inspector James Snedden said there was no doubt the fire was intentionally started.  Indications are there was a break-in prior to the blaze.

Police and fire investigations continue.

Early Sunday morning a pet cat awakened five persons alerting them to a fire in the living room of a house at 1572 Nairn St.

Alex McLean, his wife, two children and a visitor fled unhurt from the fire which caused about $25,000 damage.  Cause is under investigation.
