Three persons are in critical condition in hospital today – victims of fire in the city over the last two days.
John D’Annunzio, 59, was found lying unconscious on a couch in his smoke-filled apartment at 415 Princess Ave., Thursday afternoon and was carried out by Firefighter Paul McPherson.
Firefighter McPherson wrenched his back in the rescue but declined hospital treatment.
Mr. D’Annunzio suffered burns and smoke inhalation and is in critical condition in Victoria Hospital. Damage to the apartment and contents was set at about $3,000.
Charles Jackson, 88, and his wife, Beatrice, 68 were also carried unconscious and to safety by a firefighter, Wayne Norton, from a fire at their 905 Dufferin Ave home Wednesday night.
Mr. Jackson is in critical condition in Victoria Hospital and his wife is in critical condition in St. Joseph’s Hospital.
Chief Fire Inspector James Snedden said careless smoking is suspected in both fires.
The Jackson’s pet cat, reported missing after the fire, later was found hiding under Mr. Jackson’s bed, unhurt.
