In 1835 the settlement had grown to about 300 buildings including seven taverns, three blacksmith shops, two sawmills and a brewery. There was no fire hall even though fires were a common occurrence due to uncontrolled building practices and the predominant
use of wood for construction.

The first fire in London for which recordsstill exist was in 1832 at a blacksmith shop.
