An elderly woman has died following a weekend blaze at a northeast London apartment building, the city’s first fire death of 2017.

Firefighters responded to a report of an apartment fire at 744 Fanshawe Park Rd. E., located east of Adelaide Street, Saturday at 5:50 p.m.

An injured 76-year-old woman was found in one of the units, police said.

The woman, whose name hasn’t been released, was taken to London Health Sciences Centre with life-threatening injuries before being transferred to Hamilton General Hospital, where she later died, said police.

An autopsy is being performed Monday.

Officials from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office attended the scene, but police don’t consider it suspicious.
