Fire Chief Milton C. Mathers

(1939-1958)

Milton Mathers was horn in Parkhill. Before he joined the London Fire Department in 1928, he worked with his father, who was a stonemason. Mathers was one of the first firefighters to arrive at the Kingsmill department store fire in 1932 and later recalled il as the “worst and most punishing tire in his memory. He worked his way through the ranks serving as chauffeur, lieutenant, and Captain.

In 1958, Mathers was appointed to replace Chief McRonald. Chief Mathers drove himself and saved the city S20,000 in salaries for a chauffeur. fie was elected as President of the Ontario Fire Chiefs Association for 1961-62 and was president of the Canadian Fire Chiefs Association in 1903. He retired in 1970 after 40+ years of service.

Chief Mathers died in 1993.
