Fire Chief Charles Scott

(1929-1939)

Charles S. Scott was born in  Lobo Township and joined the London Fire Department in  1903. He moved quickly into  the senior ranks.

By 1906,  Scott was a lieutenant and  three years later he was promoted to assistant chief.

He survived a number of brushes  with death including a fall down an elevator shaft in  1909. After escaping from a  collapsing root at the Perrin biscuit plant fire in 1911, Scott said the “close shave” was  all in a day’s work. In 1917, he had a toe amputated; later  he was injured mounting a tire truck. Scott was second-in command at the fire department for 20 years before being named fire chief in 1929.

Chief Scott held the chief’s job until his retirement in 1939.  He died in 1951.
