Crews extinguish construction fire at London Ice Park

imageThe London Fire Department was called to the London Ice Park on Tuesday after workers discovered a fire that had smoldered overnight.

Crews arrived at the scene around 11:40 a.m. and found light smoke in the two-story arena complex at 99 Brookside Street.

Officials say workers had been welding and using cutting saws on Monday on a tar roof that was part of the original single-story structure, but is now inside the building, unknowingly starting a fire.

Fire crews used thermal imaging cameras to see where the fire actually was and used steel cutting tools to access the fire.

It took about an hour-and-a-half to extinguish the fire.

Everyone got out of the building safely and no injuries were reported.

Fortunately, crews were able to contain it to the construction zone, officials say that will keep the cost of the structure damage to a minimum.
