London Police say a 57-year-old man is facing a charge of arson in connection to an early morning fire Saturday at a variety store in the city’s east end.

It was around 2 a.m. when police say an eyewitness observed the fire at Starlite Variety at 560 Hamilton Road and called emergency crews. At the scene, firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, which caused an estimated $25,000 in damages.

No injuries were reported in the fire, as the store was vacant at the time.

Police say the incident was caught on surveillance camera, and investigators deemed it to be an arson. The video helped assist investigators in identifying the party responsible, police said.

As a result of the investigation, Steven Elson, 57, of London has been charged with one count of arson causing property damage.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact London Police at 519-661-5670 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
