Fire Chief John Aitken
(1908-1927)
Irish born John Aitken became a permanent employee of the fire department on May 24, 1881, after serving four years as a call man for the department.
That same Victoria Day was one of the most tragic days in London’s history as the steamship Victoria capsized on the Thames River leaving nearly 200 people dead. Aitken became a lieutenant and then a captain in the department. He was appointed fire chief in 1908 following the death of Fire Chief Lawrence Clark.
Chief Aitken retired in 1927 indicating he needed a rest after a half-century of service with the fire department. During that time, he had always been on call tor 24 hours every day.
On his death in 1932, Chief Aitken was remembered as a fearless officer who contributed to the efficiency of the department.
