Fire Chief Gary Weese
(1993-99)
Gary Weese was born and raised in Chatham where his father served as fire chief. After a move to London, Weese joined the London lire Department in 1966. He also returned to school as a part time student and graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a degree in political science and a diploma in public administration. His education, coupled with 26 years of experience with the department, led to his appointment as tire chief in 1993.
Weese was one of 21 applicants for the job to succeed Chief Fitzgerald. Mayor Tom Gosnell said Weese’s experience and managerial skills were key tactors in his appointment. Chief Weese handled the expansion of the fire department to serve the areas annexed by London in 1993. He also oversaw the fire department’s move to a new central fire hall on Horton Street in 1996.
City Manager Linda Reed paid tribute to Chief Weese for his proactive community services approach, which included many initiatives to enhance public education, tire prevention and lite safety.
