shoulderFlash_300h.fwSpringbank Apartment Building Temporarily Evacuated Following Ground Floor Blaze

There were some tense moments Wednesday morning at a high-rise apartment building on Springbank, near Wonderland.

At around 5:30a.m., the fire alarm started going off at the building at 492 Springbank Drive, and some residents who left their units to see what was going on were met with smoke.

Residents were temporarily evacuated, as fire crews extinguished the blaze on the ground floor.

Fire officials believe someone set fire to some garbage or clothing at the back entrance of the building, off the parking lot.

“It appears to be contained to a shelter that leds from the back of the building into the parking lot,” said apartment resident Laura Morke.

After the blaze was put out, firefighters had to clear the building of smoke.

“They have a bunch of fans going throughout the first couple of floors of the building. I’m on the 6th floor, and it’s filled with smoke. You can tell there’s been a fire here,” said Morke.

It appears there were no injuries.

A damage estimate has not been released, though it appears to be minimal.

The investigation continues.
