No injuries were reported after a fire tore through the garage of a two-storey home on Riverside Drive Friday night.london-fire-1

Crews were called to the scene at 1135 Riverside Drive around 8:16 p.m. after a passer-by noticed the garage of the home ablaze.

The passer-by managed to call firefighters, and alert residents, who all made it out safely.

At the scene, fire crews managed to contain the fire within the garage, keeping the flames from spreading to the interior of the home.

“The garage was totally destroyed,” said District Fire Chief Kirk Loveland. “There were two cars parked in the garage, they were also destroyed. And a shed with a snow blower and different things on the east side of the house was also destroyed. So it basically engulfed all of that part of the home.”

Loveland says there was some smoke damage to the interior of the home, but fire crews managed to start ventilating the building early on.

The exterior of the home suffered some minor damage as crews worked to extinguish spot fires.

“It was more to the outside, on the face and the soffits,” Loveland said. “We just wanted to make sure that the fire didn’t extend further and cause further damage later.”

Damage from the fire has been estimated at $180,000, taking into account damage to the building, the items inside, and the vehicles destroyed.

No injuries to either the occupants of the home or fire crews were reported.

“Great response by that passer-by who alerted the occupants, and enabled the family members who were in the home at the time to get out safely,” Loveland said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the London Fire Inspector, and Loveland says the fire is not considered suspicious.
