They’ve rung the bell and honked the horn — London’s latest fire house is officially up and running.
Londoners were invited into London Fire Department Station 7 for its opening Friday afternoon, with Mayor Joni Baechler leading the praise.
“This new and modern station is an example of council’s commitment to invest in the community,” she said. “This fire hall is an important resource for the neighbourhood, for the city of London, for fire protection and for fire safety education.”
The northeast London building’s service officially began with a ceremonial hose connection Friday, although it’s been in operation since March. It’s now at 1925 Webster St., after the old fire house at 1192 Highbury Ave. was retired. It had served the community since 1962 but changes in traffic flow and fire apparatus meant a new fire house was needed.
Fire Chief John Kobarda said the $2.4-million building is performing better than the old one.
“The relocation of the station also has resulted in increased efficiencies enabling us to provide quicker responses to the neighbourhoods in northeast London, as well as provide a more consistent level of aerial truck response across the city,” he said.
