The cause of a serious late night fire at a Richmond Row staple remains under investigation, and damage has been pegged at $75,000, fire officials say.

Fire crews were called to Campus Hi-Fi on Richmond St. just south of Oxford St. around 11 p.m. Friday after a tenant in the apartment above the restaurant reported smoke coming from their floor registers.

At the scene, firefighters found heavy smoke throughout the restaurant along with very high heat. Crews forced their way in through the building’s front and rear doors and extinguished the blaze, said District Fire Chief Shawn Fitzgerald.

“The fire was contained within the kitchen-area of the restaurant,” Fitzgerald said. “(It) did a lot of smoke and heat damage throughout the restaurant area. We spent some time ventilating, just clearing smoke and heat from the restaurant area, and then clearing a bit of smoke from the apartment above.”

Crews remained at the scene until around 1 a.m., Fitzgerald said, adding the occupants of the second floor apartment relocated for the night due to the lingering smell of smoke.

Richmond St. was closed off to traffic for several hours as a result.

The fire caused around $75,000 in damages to the restaurant area of the building, and the cause remains under investigation by the fire inspector. The restaurant was closed at the time of the fire, and no injuries were reported.

It’s not known how long Campus Hi-Fi will remain closed as a result of the fire, but Fitzgerald said it would likely take some time to rebuild and restore the interior.

“I imagine more than a couple days, it would be a few weeks if not a month’s time, I estimate,” Fitzgerald said.
