Two elderly people are fortunate to be alive after their mini-van collided with a 45,000 kilogram crane on Wednesday morning.

The crane’s tethered wrecking ball tore through the passenger compartment, remarkably right between the two occupants.

Both were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The crane was traveling southbound on Clarke Rd. between Oxford St. and Dundas St. when the northbound van crossed into the southbound lane. A head on collision between the van and the wrecking ball ensued. The impact caused the wrecking ball to rip through the van’s roof and sent it reeling backwards 25 metres.

All lanes of traffic are closed as police investigate the incident.

Police were unable to estimate when the road would re-open.
