With London sweltering under extreme heat and a smog advisory, the London Fire Department has issued a ban on all open-air burns under the city’s Open Air Burning Bylaw until further notice.

The department will indicate on its website, www.london.ca/fire, when the ban is lifted.

Open air burning includes the use of outdoor fire pits and recreational burning under certain conditions.

Outdoor cooking may be conducted between 11 a.m. and midnight, provided the fire is no larger than 46 centimetres in length, 46 centimetres in width and 30 centimetres in height.

This policy does not include barbecues, which may be used at any time.

This is the second such ban issued this month.

According to Environment Canada, the forecasted high for London for Friday (June 29) is 32 C.

The Middlesex-London Health Unit issued an extreme heat alert Thursday (June 28), but the alert was lifted Friday.
