An 8 year veteran London firefighter is being praised for her part in saving a mans life.

Allison Vicker received the Red Cross Rescuer Award Monday for an incident last summer during a mini-marathon.

Vicker was off duty and participating in the race in downtown London last August, when she noticed something go terribly wrong.

“After we rounded the bend on Richmond Street, we noticed a man who went head first into the concrete about 100 feet in front of us,” she said.

Vicker rushed to the mans aid.

The 32 year old man had suffered a seizure and his vital signs were absent.

Her instincts immediately kicked in and she began maintaining his airway and performing chest compressions while an ambulance was being called.

Paramedics pulled out a defibrillator and the man eventually got his pulse back.

“Once he was being put into the ambulance, he was breathing on his own and my friend looked at me and asked, What do we do now?” she said.

Vicker replied with a chuckle, “We finished the race.

“Vicker said shes honoured to receive the award and shes just glad her training was able to help save the persons life.

“It really was a combined effort of all the bystanders on scene at that moment.  Everyone stepped up and helped out a person who was in need.  It was great to see,” said Vicker.
