The London police and fire department responded to an early morning fire at an apartment building complex on Huron Street on Sunday (Jan. 15).

One man has been charged with Arson Endangering Life after a fire broke out in an top-floor unit on an eight-floor apartment complex on Huron Street early Sunday morning (Jan. 15).

It was determined the fire was set inside one of the units.

London Fire Department Platoon Chief Syd Gatenby said the blaze at a 1257 Huron St. was so hot that a firefighter’s helmet started to melt.

Gatenby said that while damage was contained within the unit, there was fire damage to the balcony and collateral run-off water damage to some neighbouring apartments.

Considering the nearest station is only three minutes away, by looking up to the unit, there appeared to be a significant amount of damage done. While Gatenby said he couldn’t say much because it’s under investigation, he noted the department doesn’t see a lot of fires like that.

“Most of the multi-residential apartment complexes that we go to, due to the efforts of our Fire Prevention Division, are very well protected by smoke alarm systems and monitor systems,” he said. “They (fires), generally speaking, do not get to the point that one has.”

There were no injuries as a result of the fire. The charge hasn’t been proven in a court of law.
