A man is in hospital in critical condition following a Thursday morning fire in the city’s east end that displaced about 12 tenants.
Firefighters responded to reports of smoke coming out of a building with four units at 353 Stratton Dr., south of Dundas Street and west of Clarke Road, shortly before 9 a.m.
Firefighters pulled a man out of a basement unit that was on fire and performed CPR on him before he was taken to hospital with critical injuries.
“One of our crew members forced entry into that lower unit . . . and very shortly thereafter making entry we found one occupant and firefighters rescued the occupant from the unit,” said Gary Mosburger, platoon chief with the London fire department.

No one else was hurt in the blaze that caused about $150,000 in damage, he said.
About 12 residents of the fourplex were displaced by the fire, and the city’s emergency management was contacted to help find accommodations for them, Mosburger said.
One of those residents was Theodore Smith, who wasn’t in his apartment when the fire started.
“I was taking my kids to school and when I came back, all the fire trucks were already here,” he said.
“Smoke was getting into our unit. That’s how my wife noticed the fire and she started banging on the other doors.”
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Mosburger said, adding the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has been notified.
