A fire investigator is at the scene of an early morning fire at the partially demolished Tepperman’s store near the intersection of Wharncliffe and Commissioners roads.
London police spokesman Const. Dennis Rivest said police are treating the fire as suspicious since the cause of the blaze is not yet known.
London Fire Department Deputy Chief Brian George said an alarm call came in at just before 4 a.m. Friday (April 20) and fire crews were on scene until about 5:30 a.m.
He said the cause of the blaze is still undetermined and could not confirm whether investigators are considering the fire as suspicious.
London police were still guarding the scene at 9 a.m. and signs around the site warn about the presence of asbestos in the building.
Witnesses near the scene said they believed firefighters battled two small fires within the structure and had extinguished the blazes within roughly 30 minutes of arriving at the scene.
No one was injured.
Tepperman’s — a business which sells furniture, mattresses, appliances and electronics — moved from the location of the fire in October 2008, to a new location on Wharncliffe Road.
