Investigators will return to the scene Wednesday of an apartment fire that claimed the life of a 39-year-old man.

Fire crews were originally called to 140 Langarth Street West near Wharncliffe and Baseline just after midnight Tuesday for a grass or bonfire.

Engine three was first on the scene.

“The captain did notice that the fire seemed to have an origin coming from a window right at the east side of the apartment building,” said District Chief Al Braatz.

“Upon further investigation, he noticed that it seemed to come from the apartment itself.”

The call was then upgraded to a structure fire and extra crews were dispatched.

When firefighters entered the unit, they located an unresponsive male inside the door. He was pulled from the area, and fire crews performed CPR until EMS arrived. The victim was transported to Victoria Hospital with vital signs absent, and Police confirmed mid-Tuesday morning the 39-year-old victim had died.

The man’s name has not been released yet.

No other residents were injured in the blaze.

“Shocking experience overall,” said Barry, a resident at the apartment who witnessed the fire.

“I think we just feel so fortunate that most of us came out. We’re sad about the death, but it could have been worse.”

Barry said he didn’t know the victim very well, but that he kept to himself.

The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.

Damage is estimated at around $80,000.
