Firefighters were at the scene of a blaze at a Florence Street furniture stripping shop early today trying to contain flames before they reached chemicals stored on the premises.

The fire broke out shortly before midnight at The Velvet Touch of London 873 Florence St.  Firemen manning a total of six pumpers and two ladder trucks were expected to remain on duty well into the night.

Police and fire officials said containers filled with chemicals could create toxic fumes if ignited by the fire, which was causing heavy smoke over a large area around the Western Fairgrounds.

Police set up roadblocks along Florence Street and along northbound and southbound routes leading to the scene of the fire.  No injuries were reported.
