Retired deputy fire chief David Kitterman addresses the crowd at the London Fire Department Memorial Headquarters yesterday. Uniforms and gear were placed in 21 chairs to commemorate the London firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty since 1855.

“We’re just doing our job. That’s what we get paid to do,” says Scott Hunt, a London firefighter. “Obviously it was a tragic day ‘ 343 firefighters passed away just doing their job. It was a sad day.”

Hunt, who has been with the department for seven years, was working as a firefighter in his hometown of Labrador City on Sept. 11, 2001. He was one of hundreds who paid tribute yesterday to those who lost their lives when the World Trade Center towers collapsed.

While many people laud firefighters for their bravery in the face of danger, Hunt considers the risk part of his job description.
