hear-the-beep-sleep

London’s firefighters are gearing up for a busy week of public safety awareness.

Fire Prevention Week runs October 4th to 10th and this year’s theme is: hear the beep where you sleep.

According to fire officials, roughly half of home fire deaths result from fires reported overnight, between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

“The idea is, oftentimes children for example sleep so deeply that they don’t hear the smoke alarm when it goes off, even if it’s outside their door,” Deputy Fire Chief Brian McLaughlin tells AM980.

“This makes them quite vulnerable. The thought process is, by installing it directly into their bedroom, should the smoke alarm go off it would be loud enough to wake the child.”

McLaughlin says families should also create a home escape plan with multiple exit strategies.

“It’s also important that you practice your home escape plan and that you include a place of safety outside of the structure so that you and your family can meet together and you can make sure everyone’s accounted for and then you can call 911.”

A list of Fire Prevention Week events can be found on the City’s website.
