Looking at her fire gutted home Sunday morning, Sarah Rickwood said she is thankful she and her fiance and their pup were able to get out safely.

“We are just happy everyone is okay,” Rickwood said.

Rickwood’s wedding is set for July. Most of the wedding presents were destroyed in the blaze that broke out about 1:30 a.m.

The couple were awake at the time and were alerted to the fire by a neighbour knocking on their door.

Smoke and flames were coming through the roof when the first fire department units arrived at the home at 39 Cayuga Cr.

Fire officials report they were confronted by a stubborn blaze that had gained a large foothold within the structure.

Firefighters worked to keep the fire from spreading to nearby homes.

Damage has been estimated at $150,000 and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Rickwood said she and her fiance will be living with her parents until they can get a new home.

“It is a little stressful,” she said.
