Arson is suspected as the cause of an early morning fire in central London.

Just before 3 a.m. on Sunday morning (Sept. 9), London firefighters responded to a call at the corner of Colborne and Piccadilly streets. Upon arrival, they found a garbage enclosure at the rear of the building fully engulfed in flames.

A quick response by firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to the adjacent building, which contained a number of apartments as well as a variety store.

Tenants of the building were evacuated for a short time before being allowed to return to their units. No injuries were reported.

London firefighters hose down what is left of a garbage bin that officials believe was deliberately set on fire early Sunday morning (Sept.9).

District Fire Chief Wayne Brown was on scene at the fire and said this was one of what he described as “a rash” of deliberately set fires that London crews had been dealing with overnight.

Fairly confident this was a case of arson, Brown called this “a very dangerous prank that could have resulted in multiple fatalities,” as people were sleeping inside the apartments of the building at the time the fire was set.
