An early morning fire at an apartment building in east London started after a man boiling baby bottle parts on the stove accidentally fell asleep.

Firefighters responded to the scene at 1299 Huron Street near Highbury just after 2 a.m. Monday.

When they arrived, the apartment was filled with smoke.

Captain Shawn Fitzgerald tells AM980 a man, woman, and a two-month-old child were taken to hospital.

“They were sent for observation,” said Fitzgerald. “EMS is very precautious, with infants especially, but they were sent just for observation and assessment.”

No one was seriously injured, but the man did suffer burns to his hand as he tried to take the pot off the stove.

“He had a small fire on a stovetop, and had tried to remove the pot from the stovetop and received burns to his fingers and the back of his hand and had some minor smoke inhalation,” said Fitzgerald.

Damage is not extensive, and according to fire officials, the apartment had working smoke alarms.
