If you have plans to light up the night sky this Canada Day weekend, the city is extending the fireworks by-law.fireworks

Usually, the City of London only allows fireworks to be set off on Canada Day. This year they have changed the fireworks by-law to let residents set them off on Saturday night, since July 1st falls on a Tuesday.

Michael Leff runs Bob’s Fireworks with his father at the intersection of Wharncliffe Rd and Southdale Rd. He tells AM980 they’ll be open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., even on Canada Day.

“We carry a huge selection of fireworks, really ranging from individual pieces that start at a dollar, all they run all the way up to 75 dollars a piece.”

Leff says Saturday night should be good for fireworks.

“These things are always weather dependant, that’s the thing, so if we get a day where it’s really rainy, people might not be thinking of fireworks. In this case, the weather looks pretty good for the next few days, so I think we’ll be steadily busy.”

If you are setting off fireworks this weekend, make safety the number one priority.

  • Only responsible adults who are aware of the hazards and appropriate care should handle or discharge fireworks.
  • Never use illegal fireworks. Firecrackers are illegal.
  • Carefully read and follow the label directions on fireworks packaging for setup and safe distance for spectators.
  • Always keep a water hose or pail of water close by when discharging fireworks.
  • Keep sparklers away from children. They can cause severe burns.
  • Light only one firework at a time and only when they are on the ground. Never try to light a firework in your hand or re-light dud fireworks.
  • Discharge fireworks well away from combustible materials such as buildings, trees and dry grass.
  • Discharge fireworks only if wind conditions do not create a safety hazard.
