London firefighters were kept busy on Sunday night (Jan. 15), after responding to a fire on Central Avenue near Richmond Street.

According to London Fire Department Platoon Chief Syd Gatenby, firefighters were dispatched to a a restaurant, The Spot, located at 206 Central Avenue at approximately 8:05 p.m.

Upon arrival at the building, Gatenby said there were flames coming from the back corner of the building. Noting the type of construction used in the structure and the amount of renovations that had been done to the building, he said it was obvious that the fire travelled up inside the walls and spread to the attic area.

The building had already been evacuated when the fire department arrived and no firefighters were injured fighting the stubborn blaze.

None of the nearby structures were damaged, something Gatenby attributed to excellent job done by firefighters in limiting adjacent exposures while containing the fire to the actual building itself.

Six pumper trucks and two aerial ladders responded to the initial call and approximately 40 firefighters were on hand battling the fire at the height of the blaze.

While there was speculation as to the cause of the fire, no details or damage estimates had been released as of early Monday morning.
