Apartment Fire Causes $300K Damage, Residents Displaced in South London

A late night apartment fire has caused significant damage and left almost two dozen people out of their units in south London.
London Firefighters were called to 30 Conway Drive in the area of Bradley Avenue and Wellington Road at around 12:12 a.m. Tuesday.
“We were dispatched full general alarm to a seven storey highrise,” said Platoon Chief Lewis Carter. “The first arriving unit on scene could see smoke and flames coming from a bedroom unit on the seventh floor.”
The occupant of the apartment that caught fire made it out of their unit and knocked on other doors to get people to evacuate.
“The alarm system went off as well, so pretty much everybody was evacuated by the time we got there, certainly out of the apartment, and most of the people that lived there were out of the building,” said Carter.

Thankfully, no one was injured.
Damage is being considered significant, with an early estimate pegged at $300,000.
“Based on the fact that we were throwing a lot of water on there to knock this thing down, a lot of the water goes down through the walls to the apartment below the actual fire unit,” said Carter.
There was also damage to the neighbouring units.
LTC buses were brought in to keep residents warm as fire crews extinguished the blaze and assessed the damage.
City Officials were also called to the scene to assist those who could were not able to return to their units.
The fire is not being considered suspicious.
Investigators will return to the building later Tuesday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
