London Firefighters and members of the hazmat team were dispatched to the London Ice Park on Wednesday night for the second time in as many months.
Crews were called to the scene to deal with an ammonia leak at the arena on Brookside Street around 8 p.m. after several people inside, and outside, the arena noticed a ‘distinct smell.’
“I believe it was probably 15 or 20 people that were playing hockey and and were still in some of the dressing rooms,” said Platoon Chief Jim Holmes.
“The odour was fairly strong, there was people in the neighbourhood that were complaining about it. We advised them to stay in their houses and close their windows and doors.”
No one was taken to hospital, but the arena will remain closed until further inspection by officials on Thursday morning.
“There was some issue with the compressor at the London Ice Park that caused the release valve to do what it’s supposed to do and it released an amount of ammonia in the air and also in the building it’s self.”
Just last month, the arena was evacuated after a zamboni leaked carbon monoxide. The London Fire Department’s hazmat team also had to respond to that incident.
Two men’s league teams were playing at the time of that leak.
One person was taken to hospital for treatment, while others were assisted at the scene by paramedics.
