London Police say one person is confirmed dead following an overnight fire in London’s old south area.
The original call for a grass or bonfire came in just after midnight Tuesday at 140 Langarth Street West near Wharncliffe and Baseline.
Engine three was first on the scene.
“The captain did notice that the fire seemed to have an origin coming from a window right at the east side of the apartment building,” said District Chief Al Braatz.
“Upon further investigation, he noticed that it seemed to come from the apartment itself.”
The call was then upgraded to a structure fire and extra crews were dispatched.
When firefighters entered the unit, they located an unresponsive male inside the door. He was pulled from the area, and fire crews performed CPR until EMS arrived. The victim was transported to Victoria Hospital with vital signs absent, and Police confirmed mid-Tuesday morning the 39-year-old victim had died.
The man’s name has not been released yet.
Residents of the two-storey building were evacuated, but have since returned to their units.
The investigation into the cause of the fire continues.
“Investigators are still on scene, the Fire Marshal’s office was notified, and we notified our on-call chief and adminstrative chief,” said Braatz.
The extent of damage is not known at this time.
